RAFW S/S2011: ELLERY

The show was held at White Rabbit Gallery in Sydney, an amazing location for the show. The models walked in pairs, with hype about Jennifer Hawkins modelling... whatever really. She became boring when she popped up on everything Myer related. Other than that the collection was interesting - the thing I liked most was being so incredibly close that I could feel the fabrics as the models brushed past. I adored the incorporation of the clear pink top layered subtly over a shirt dress - making the dress look plastic like. The collection could have been more coherent rather it had a bit of everything merged slightly with the label's trademark aesthetics. And also, she does menswear now? Cool bananas.

RAFW SS11: DION LEE

Pretty much the most anticipated show for RAFW is Dion Lee's... There have been mixed reviews and I'd have to admit I am mildly disappointed by the collection. It is nothing as ground breaking as the previous two RAFW shows, though peaking early has served the designer well. The collection featured Dion Lee's impeccable tailoring and surgical precision. But after seeing that a few times, the wow factor dims down a little. The slits on the already mini skirts reached record highs... darling, I can see your undies. I really doubt I could walk out in one of these and not experience some form of sexual harassment. Having said all of this, it was still more interesting than many other shows I have seen this week. It wasn't a bad collection, I think it's because expectations from Dion Lee are set so soaringly high.

Possibly my favourite collection so far. A super pretty colour palette of powder blue, blush pink, black and white. There were flowing floor length dresses as well as cool minis. Sheer fabrics and draping made for a really relaxed range which was simple, minimalist and breathtakingly beautiful. I will definitely be investing my dollars in the Michael Lo Sordo direction.

2011 COSTUME INSTITUTE GALA: BEST AND WORST

Agree or disagree if you will, but I have attempted to order these outfits from the Met's 2011 Costume Institute Gala in order of best to worst.

Definitely not the most outrageous outfit but certainly beautiful.

Liv Tyler in Givenchy Haute Couture. Fantastic.

Brooklyn Decker looks a treat with her simple, eye catching number by Michael Kors. I love the thigh high slits these days.

ADR is that an egg on your head?

I don't rate these two red gowns because they match the carpet. I don't know... carpet isn't exactly something I want to blend in with.

Isabel Lucas has made some questionable fashion choices, not sure if the accessories convince me.

Elegant but also super boring.

Something about this look reminds me of a butterfly being strangled in a web.

There is way too much strap going on here.

RAFW SS11: SARA PHILLIPS

Another cool show from Sara Phillips, this season taking a more natural turn. The show featured a giant tree covered in Australian native flora. The collection was inspired by the designers relationship with the native Australian landscape. The prints were a refreshing take on the floral print, drawing from native flora and fauna such as waratahs, lizard prints and a beautiful collection of snakes.

I adored the colours in the Karla Spetic show teamed with some bold and brilliant prints. The looks were girly yet polished with an abundance of bright shirts and also flowing dresses in eye popping hues.

The latest from Arnsdorf was clean and feminine with some minimalistic looks and bright summer colours. I didn't particularly like the bright fuchsia as it seemed a little overpowering amongst the palette, but the mint green was lovely. Garments draped effortlessly creating fresh, simple looks with the addition of accessories to the Arnsdorf repertoire.

An intricate collection that maintained Zimmermann’s florals and feminine aesthetic yet progressed towards a more dreamy, mature direction. There was less emphasis on swimwear and also featured more soft, natural and subdued colour palette. I loved the high necklines and thigh high slits which reminded me of traditional Asian dresses but at the same time had a country farm-girl vibe to it. The show reminded me of Rodarte's FW2011 collection. Overall I liked the incorporation of different fabrics and textures. It was a refreshing change to label's previous collections.

So I managed to escape my captor, (a pretty good excuse for my lack of blogging) the end my uni semester means that I'll have lots and lots of time to blog... hooray. However in my absence I did not completely forget about my lovely readers, I working away attempting to find some decent content to post when I had the time. Dempsey took the fashion week by storm, walking in more shows than I can be bothered to count. I recently got in touch with this fantastic new model and managed to get an interview.

1. Hey Dempsey, how are you?

Hey, I'm good how are you?

2. I'm good, what is your discovery story? How did you begin modelling?

I've always loved making clothes so when I got the chance to become a model, it was so good to start travelling and seeing different creations. I thought if I kept modeling I could learn more from being in the industry, travelling, meet interesting people and make friends along the way.

3. You just did your first proper fashion week at the 15th RAFW. How was that for you?

It was really exciting! My boyfriend, Jasper was working with me at some of the shows! I got to see the collections up close and feel which was awesome. It was a marathon of a week! I had such a great time, I'll definately come back next year.

4. Where do you call home?

Perth.

5. What else have you been up to lately? Any interesting stories about your travels?

After Jasper and I got back from Tokyo last year we went to see his family in Auckland and went sailing around on the Hauraki Gulf. Then we flew back to Perth to see my family and went to Rottnest Island. After a month in Perth we flew to Melbourne for a week before going to Sydney for fashion week.

6. Do you have any favourite designers or creatives?

There are soo many but some that I can think of now are Kenzo's couture, Alexander McQueen's spring summer 2010 collection and Christopher Kane.

7. How would you describe your own personal style?

Crazy cool.

8. Do you have any beauty routines that you stick to, products that you can't live without?

I use Jurlique moisturiser on my face everyday and mix acai berrys with my juice every morning.

9. What music are you currently listening to?

Dubstep, rock, indie, electro, blues & roots.

10. What's next for you, will we be seeing you kill the internation runway?

I'm just seeing how it goes here in Sydney at the moment but im thinking of travelling later on this year.

In the current swing of things, specifically the beginning of my first year of University studying a combined Bachelor of Art Theory and Bachelor of Arts at the College of Fine Arts and Art Month Sydney 2010, tso will be featuring a few artists and their works. Currently exhibiting at the Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery is contemporary Australian painter Dale Frank's works. With a career spanning over thirty years with inclusions in the Venice Biennale 1984, 8th Biennale of Sydney, Biennale of Sydney 2010 and a major solo retrospective at the MCA in Sydney held in 2000, Frank has surely established his place as a well respected artist of his generation. The exhibition titled "Ice Age" includes a series of twenty nine intriguingly titled abstact paintings in the signature style of the artist.

Who is Karri Pledger you ask? Karri is tso's first featured face in an upcoming segment dedicated to up and coming models called... "Featured Faces". Karri recently won the annual Girlfriend Rimmel Model Search 2009, winning a two year modelling contract with Australia's Chic Model Management and Next Model Management New York. With past competition winners including the likes of Catherine McNeil, Abbey Lee Kershaw and Sarah Stephens, Karri's future certainly looks more than bright. The 15 year old red-headed beauty has been compared to fellow Australian model royalty Gemma Ward. I recently had a quick chat with Karri following her competition success.

Hi Karri, how are you?

Hey, I'm great thanks :)

Congratulations on taking out the 2009 Girlfriend Model Competition. With past winners of the competition including the likes of Catherine McNeil, Abbey Lee Kershaw and Sarah Stephens hitting international status how does winning it feel?

Thank you. Winning has been amazing, the idea of modelling internationally is so exciting. I'm sure it'll be a life changing experience.

What was the competition like? What were your most memorable moments?

All aspects of the competition were great. I'd have to say that the part I enjoyed the most was the winner's shoot; working in a professional environment with such talented people was a great experience and I love how the photos fitted together to create a story. A close second would be the winner's announcement event, it was such a fun afternoon and I got to meet some amazing people in the industry - it was overwhelming.

At 15 and your career about to take off, have you always wanted to model?

From the age of about 11 I started to understand what modelling actually involved and I found it to be very intriguing. It's such a fast paced, non-stop profession and every job is a totally new experience.

What will you be doing now that the competition is over?

I guess the next step for me is to talk to Girlfriend Magazine and Chic Model Management to see what happens next. Then hopefully I'll be off to NYC.

Do you have any favourite designers/style icons?

Christophe Decarnin for Balmain, the way he has re-introduced structured shoulders is inspiring.

What music are you currently listening to?

I'm not much of a mainstream music fan. I'm more into the alternative music, especially British rock. I've recently fallen in love with The Metros, The Cribs and The Futureheads. I also love Bloc Party, there's nothing else like them.

Where is your ultimate travel destination?

I know it's a bit of a cliché but I've always wanted to go to New York. But really, having never left Australia I'd be happy to travel anywhere. The world's such a huge place and I can't wait to explore it.

Do you have any unusual habits or phobias?

There's nothing jaw-droppingly strange that I can do, although I can touch my nose with my tongue and bend my arms at an unusual angle. Also, I'm the girl who undeliberately gets attached to and constantly uses weird words... Gumby for instance - "You can't wear that, you look like a Gumby." It's completely meaningless yet I can't stop it slipping out.

You have been compared to fellow Australian beauty Gemma Ward. Do you have any beauty must haves, routines?

I just try and look after myself as well as possible. I make sure to clean my skin properly and always wear sun block and I look after my hair by avoiding blow-dryers and straighteners.

And finally, what is next for you?

What's next for me? There's a question I can't completely answer. Of course I hope to continue modelling, I'm just not sure how far it will take me - so for now, watch this space.

interview with saint augustine academy

following australian fashion week tso had a chat with alvin manalo, the creative mind behind up and coming label saint augustine academy. definately a designer to keep your eye on.

tso: Hey Alvin. How are you?

alvin: I'm a little sick with the flu right now actually! I think I've been wearing myself out with all the craziness of fashion week.. although partying for 6 nights in a row probably didn’t help ha ha.

tso: Have you always wanted to be a designer, if not what did you want to be as a kid?

alvin: When I was a kid, I actually really wanted to be a comic book artist, I really loved the X-Men and Batman comics. Drawing has always been a big interest of mine.

tso: How did you get into designing? How did Saint Augustine Academy come about?

alvin: I was studying Economics at uni when I decided that it wasn’t for me – the appeal of doing something creative was too much, so I formed the label with a friend from uni, Adrian who has since gone on to become the label’s business manager. The label was born out of not being able to find what I wanted from local designers so I decided to make things that I would actually wear.

tso: Congratulations on your recent show at RAFW SS09/10. Your collections have been inspired by the indie rock scene, was it the same for this collection or did you draw inspiration from elsewhere?

alvin: Thank you. My collection are always inspired by music, you are right! That’s kind of become the Saint Augustine Academy signature. “Do You Believe Her?” references a song of the same name by Danish band The Raveonettes. With this collection I aimed to showcase the different musical elements contained in that song; surf rock, 60’s girl groups and British invasion bands.

tso: What are you listening to these days?

alvin: I’ve just discovered some new favourites; Black Angels, Black Mountain, Dead Confederate, Au Revoir Simone and Passion Pit.

tso: You have dressed the likes of Nick Cave, Interpol, MGMT and Bloc Party to name a few. How does that feel?

alvin: It feels amazing.. it’s definitely my favourite part of what I do. There’s something about seeing one of my idols wearing (and liking) clothes that I have created.. doesn’t get much better than that!

tso: Any cool stories about meeting any of the rockers?

alvin: We arranged to meet Nick Cave this year while he was in Sydney for the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival (which was amazing by the way!) and his manager was kind enough to invite me and Candi to go to his hotel room for a private fitting. While we were there, his beautiful wife and twin sons arrived! We felt like we were dreaming.. We had to have a drink in the bar downstairs afterwards to recover.

tso: Do you have anybody on your wish list to dress?

alvin: I’d love to see Bob Dylan and Morrisey in my clothes. Also, Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Lydia Lunch would look amazing in my womenswear..

tso: How are you finding womenswear compared to menswear? Do you find either more challenging, fun, are you more enthusiastic about one or the other?

alvin: Womenswear is a little more challenging, I’m still learning the ropes a little there. But I love doing both, its so great when someone comes into the store and gets excited to find something they like.. makes all the hard work worth it!

tso: In a pool of never ending competition for womenswear, what can we expect from Saint Augustine Academy? Will you be broadening the womenswear range or stick mainly to menswear?

alvin: Womenswear will continue to grow with coming seasons, I would eventually like to make each collection half/half. I’d like for Saint Augustine Academy to known for being a good womenswear label, as well as mens eventually.

tso: What’s next for you and Saint Augustine Academy?

alvin: Right now, I’m designing Winter 2010 – my inspiration for this collection is kind of taking over my life right now, its such a rich source.. and for once its not a band or album.. although it is music-related (of course!) We are also planning our 5th birthday celebrations, along with the first birthday of our flagship store.. So a big party is in order!

Hailing from Siberia Russia, she has worked for the likes of Missoni, Balenciaga, Marc jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Calvin Klein, Versace, Donna Karan, Proenza Schouler, Thakoon, Narcisco Rodriguez and Vivienne Westwood just to name a few.

Ekat took some time off her busy schedule to talk to tso...

1. Hello Ekat, how are you? What are you up to?

Hey :)

I got reeeaaaally busy at the end of this year, flights between Tokyo and NY.

Had celebrated my 21st birthday in NY :) on 22 November

2. How did you begin your career? What's your discovery story?

My mum looooved to take pictures and videos of me and my brother when we were young, I have a huge collection at home lol. That's how I began to play in front of a camera....but I never wanted to be a model, I was a ballroom dancer... I always had a problem with a partner because I had grown fast and was tall for my age.

Each year in our city we have a beauty competition, I was 14 and I wanted to try out, I love competition :) (fighting haha)

One of the judges of that competition was a director of a big model agency in Moscow and she invited 5 girls for a photo shoot , I was one of them.... it was the summer 2002 and I went to Moscow after those days, it started a whole new story of my life....

3. What has been you favourite job so far?

Just had a shoot for i-D magazine in London, I love to work with english teams, they have a new fresh eye on fashion - i think so...

Shot for Velvet in NY in Chelsea Hotel , if you know what I’m tallking about ;) this place is crazy, to understand you need to see it... in this hotel, every room is different, paintings and posters all around the halls... many famous musicians, artists have lived there and still do....

4. Any designers you wish to work for?

I had the chance (luck) to work with big designers like Francesco Costa - Calvin Klein , Frida Giannini - Gucci , I did looks for them while it was exclusive for a show . You can see how a piece of material becomes art on you.

When you do shows you have casting where you try outfits for the runway. Then you have fittings, by that time you see all the hard work of all the designers.

I loooove Balmain I want to work with them...and I never did Chanel, I would love to work with them too

5. Where do you call home?

NY East Village, East side of London town, Paris under the Eiffel tower (haha i wish)... but really my home is all the world. I can't choose, for now...

6. What's your personal style? What are your favourite designers?

It's hard to talk about style , for me I haven’t found my personal style yet, I’m trying some thing new all the time and seasons changing style and I’m growing and starting to try many new things which I would have never wore before....

Now my style icon is Emmanuelle Alt, the best stylist of French Vogue :)

Couple of favorite designers : Balmain , YSL (forever), Alexander Wang, Balenciaga, Rick Owens, Alexander McQueen

8. Any beauty secrets/must have products?

Beauty secrets are easy: healthy food, 7-8 hours of sleep and of course you need to feed your skin with vitamins: the environment is bad now if you live in a big city like NY, always traveling around the world is affecting your skin too.

I love the skin care of Shiseido, I like to try some new stuff too.

9. Have you received any cool gifts from work?

Sometimes you get gifts but not often, the best gifts I had ever received is a Balenciaga bag after I did their shows I was soooooo happy, Marc Jacobs had paid the models by clothes (we could take a couple of things from previous collections or samples) some designers do that :) :) :)

10. What would you be doing if you were not modelling?

It’s hard to say now, but if my life wasn’t this way I would go study in university in Siberia, probably in the black oil business, that's what we all do in Siberia haha

But I'm glad.... now I see so much, I have met so many interesting and amazing people, I'm learning about everything, everyday.....I have an open mind now and I don't know who iIwant to be in life (I still keep that a secret inside me lol) I will as much as I can, I will

11. What's next for you?

Haha that's a funny questions for me, I make plans of what I want to do but I never plan what will be in a couple of days or months .... I only know that it's gonna be new day tomorrow, new sun, new feelings ... I'm an optimistic person.

Stephanie Carta one of Australia's top models to hit the international modelling scene. She has worked for the likes of Balenciaga, Givenchy, Dries van Noten, Bruno Pieters, Jil Sander, Costume National, Alberta Ferretti, Paul Smith and Phi to name a few.

tso caught up with her for a chat...

1. Hey how are you??
I am great thanks! I am in Spain, just finished an amazing shoot for PARADIS magazine, with a really great crew. Here staying in Seville until tomorrow, when I return to London, to have my last hurrah with my new found english boys and aussie girls crew, before heading to Milan...

2. How did you get started?
Someone referred me to see an agent in brisbane whilst I was still in high school there... I did and the response was good. It was about finishing high school for me at that time though, which I did, and then made the move to Sydney instead of starting university to test it out..

3. Best jobs so far?
God right now I'd have to say this one! In the most amazing location and life seems surprisingly too easy for work, after the torture of coming through my first fashion week season. But also going to Bhutan in the Himalayas with Australia Vogue is very high at the top of my list... It was such an amazing experience to be able to venture into a part of the world like that, and nice people to work with too..

4. You worked exclusively for Balenciaga how does that feel?
It's so amazing. It was such hard work at the time, and was prolonged work, I think before my first show with them I spent around 5 months in and out of there.
Nicolas is a fashion genius and being interested it was quite an experience to see him at work. Having each item made onto me from pinned fabric, to final piece. Despite hard work on my behalf too I am so appreciative that they requested I spend so much time in there, and their loyalty. Every person I worked with I now see about Paris, it's cool.

5. Any cool gifts?
Not a lot in general. But the week before my first show with Balenciaga, I was presented with two amazing bags from Nicolas, I almost cried!! Since then, after my fitting of the last show, I got to have a pick at lots of stuff from there and I felt so privilidged. Also I can’t forgot the scarf Dries van Noten gave us for doing their show in Paris too, although silly me lost it in LeBaron not long after haha..

6. What’s your personal style?
My personal style is different every day. I'd say off the top of my head, alot of vintage, always, and the other three main things I wear are Ksubi, Balenciaga and Nathan Smith. I've been descibed lately as having Raf Symonds style, but also tomboy and hippy.. so iIguess depends what day you see me.. I always usually dress in something quite comfortable and easy to get off at the same time haha...

7. Favourite shopping destinations?
London: vintage at the markets, Paris: vintage at Place de Clichy or in the Marais (not giving away name!), Sydney: Ksubi or on Crown Street (vintage).

8. Beauty tips?
Have fun! Live life with lots of love and express yourself. Knowing about nutrition and what you put into your body helps a lot. Try to sleep. Dont smoke, but I do. If you do one bad thing try balance with some good things too. I haven't exercised for too long. And eat a burger every now and then for fun.

9. What’s next for you?
Wow ok. Things are just going to get even crazier. I go back to London tomorrow night, try to speed pack all my hoarded clothes with my friend Lauren (Brown) hopefully give half of them to her..
Then spend my last hours until the following night with my new english boyfriends, and Tiah (Eckhardt) and Lauren (Brown), doing as many crazy things as we can pack in until I have to walk onto the plane.
Where I'm going to Milan, to spend the next two weeks trying to fit some work in, so far Moschino and Alberta Ferretti lookbooks are my first two jobs.
God knows what else there or posibly be in NYC, but have to make sure im in Paris by Dec 11 to take my flight back to Sydney FINALLY!
I'll stay at a friends place there, me and all my amazing aussie mates are supposedly going to have some massive parties, and am actually going to visit Brisbane to see family for Christmas for the first time in two years!
Spend NYE in Sydney, collect all my vintage from the cities it is in Australia, and then in January go back to start the crazy madness of round two show season, snowing version. I'm then after going to be based in New York is the general plan.......

Following the recent release of The Teenagers album ‘Reality Check’ and their current world tour, tso caught up with Quentin Delafon from the band and had a quick chat..

How are you guys, what have you been up to?

We were in Russia we played Moscow and St Petersburg. Really cool crowds, it's really another world over there but yeah we met nice Russian peeps.

What's the story of The Teenagers? How did you meet and start the band?

We've been friends for years to start with then one night - Xmas Eve - we were drunk and decided to do a song/a band/a Myspace profile.

Your lyrics are intelligent and quirky? What inspires the music?

Sex, love, party, vodka, summer, puberty, Red Bull, ham rollz, Swedish girls...

Tell us a little bit about 'Reality Check'

It's our album, the 1st one... We never thought we would have an album out when we started! Sounds lame but sooo true. It's a very spontaneous and fresh album and its good too if you can handle the French accent and overall French sleaziness...

I hear that you're band was originally a joke. What does it feel like to gain the success that you have?

It's cool when it's unexpected

Your song ‘Starlett Johansson’ is obviously about Scarlett Johansson, have you actually met her before or after the song was released?

No, never but maybe its better like that. Imaginary lovers are always better... kind of.

If you could work with anyone in the world, who would it be?

What would you be doing if The Teenagers did not exist?

Erm boring jobs... The question is what would people do?

tso recently caught up with photographer Matt Irwin for a chat..

Hi Matt, how are you?

Yeah I'm good thanks

When did you realise you wanted to become a photographer?

I was about 17 I guess, so much funny stuff happening around me, never wanted it to end, a way of keeping it and people alive.

Most memorable shoot you worked on?

Naomi Campbell, enough said....

You’ve snapped the likes of Lindsay Lohan, Cory Kennedy, Agyness Deyn, Alice Dellal and Natasha Poly to name a few. Who would you love to photograph?

Francis Bean and loads of others!!

What are you currently working on?

Shooting the next cover of Dazed and a story for Russian Vogue and V Magazine.

If you were to have another photographer take your photo, who would it be?

Alasdair McClellan, hes' fit.

If you weren’t taking photos what would you be doing?

Working in Tesco? or dead, either one.

And finally, what’s next for you?

Money, facelift, divorce, you know, the usual.
